To all Members and Pupils-in-Chambers of the Kuala Lumpur Bar,
MIKI GOH CUP (“MGC”) 2023
The Kuala Lumpur Bar in collaboration with the Penang Bar will be hosting the inaugural Miki Goh Cup (“MGC”) 2023. The MGC is an All Women’s Tournament, and the intention is for the MGC to be a yearly event.
The MGC will be held in Penang on 23 September 2023 (Saturday).
Wembley Alexandra Goh (popularly known as Miki Goh) was called to the Bar (Middle Temple) in 1952. Miki Goh was the fourth female lawyer in Penang. She was also a Juvenile Court Magistrate and was the first lady to be appointed as a Magistrate in Singapore. She subsequently worked as an Official Assignee as well as a Public Trustee.
In May 1962, Miki Goh, together with her husband, Philip Hoalim Junior, established the law firm Syarikat Goh Guan Hoe in Penang which they ran until they retired in 2002.
Miki Goh was one of the founding members of the Women’s Centre for Change (“WCC”) and was actively involved in the same vast contacts enabled WCC to have its own shelter home.
Upon their retirement, Syarikat Goh Guan Hoe donated their personal library to the Malaysian Bar Council. They were very proud of the written appreciation by the President of the Malaysian Bar in the Bar Council’s Annual Report 2002/2003 where he stated how grateful the Bar Council was “to Philip Hoalim and Wembley Alexandra Goh, two senior lawyers who are also life partners for the generous donation of their personal library of law books to the Bar Council in May 2002. Miki was very pleased with the collection as she had kept the original publications which have been passed from two generations of family lawyers till the same have finally reached the Archives of the Bar Council To have and To Hold in perpetuity”.
In honour of Miki Goh and in reflection of all strong and ambitious women then, now and in the making, the MGC 2023 encourages all sportswomen to participate whether in the following competitive or non-competitive sports as listed below:
