Kopi O' Night: Reflections About The Bar’s Legal Aid Scheme, YBGK And Access To Justice On 9 October 2026

Dear Members of the Kuala Lumpur Bar,

The Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) (“BCLAC KL“) is pleased to invite members of the Kuala Lumpur Bar and pupils to our upcoming Kopi O’ Night discussion.

Join us for a reflective and insightful discussion on the development and impact of the Bar’s Legal Aid Scheme and the Yayasan Bantuan Guaman Kebangsaan (“YBGK“), as well as their continuing role in promoting access to justice in Malaysia. Drawing from his experience as a former Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian Bar, the speaker will share his personal reflections, experiences and observations on the evolution of legal aid, the challenges encountered, and the importance of ensuring that legal assistance remains accessible to those in need.

The session will also explore the broader significance of legal aid in upholding the rule of law, protecting fundamental rights, and ensuring that access to justice is available to all, regardless of their circumstances.

Rajen Devaraj
Former CEO of Malaysian Bar
Rajen joined the Malaysian Bar in 2006 and served as its Chief Executive Officer since 2009. During this time he had taken a keen interest in the Bar’s Legal Aid Program and was involved in the formation of YBGK. This sharing session will provide critical insights into how the Bar’s Legal Aid program has evolved and the challenges that the Bar faces in making Aceess to Justice a reality for all persons.
