Circular No: 107/2025
Date: 8 July 2025
Dear Members of the Kuala Lumpur Bar,
The KLBC Criminal Law Practice Committee recently sought feedback from the Criminal Courts in Kuala Lumpur regarding issues encountered in dealing with criminal law practitioners.
The following feedback was received from the Criminal Subordinate Courts:-
Lack of Response to Court Emails
The Courts have observed instances where emails sent to lawyers, particularly those involving case adjournments or RVT links, often go unanswered.
This raises concerns on whether such communications have been received and acknowledged by the intended recipients.
Difficulty in Contacting Lawyers
The Courts have consistently experienced challenges in contacting certain lawyers. This is due to the fact that their registered office numbers are often inactive or unreachable, and mobile numbers are likewise unreachable.
In many cases, lawyers have not informed the Court of any changes to their contact details. This hampers the Court’s ability to manage proceedings efficiently, such as making timely arrangements for foreign language interpreters.
Failure to Notify Court of Change in Representation
There have been instances where the Court was not informed of a change in lawyer or the updated contact details of the newly appointed lawyer. This disrupts communication regarding case developments and other essential matters.
Non-Compliance with Court Attire Guidelines
The Court has observed instances where members of the Bar have not adhered to the prescribed dress code. Examples include attire such as short skirts, wide-leg trousers and pencil pants.
Members are reminded to comply strictly with the Court Attire Guidelines when appearing at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex. For ease of reference, the guidelines can be accessed here.
Please also take note that the Dress Code Guidelines issued by the Chief Registrar on 1 November 2000 remain in force and must be complied with at all times.
We trust that members will take note of the above feedback and take the necessary steps to ensure continued professionalism in all dealings with the Court.
