PWC Dialogue on the Ethics and Professional Standards (EPS) Examination
The November session was held on 9 November 2011 at 5.00pm. Pupils were briefed on the purpose of the EPS course and examination as well as the expectations of the Bar Council Professional Standards & Development Committee. A total of 60 pupils attended the briefing which was presented by Puan Hendon Mohamed where valuable tips were offered to pupils sitting for the examination.

KLBC Pupils Introduction Session
Organised by the KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee (PWC), the introduction session for October was held on 10 November 2011. The session, attended by 71 pupils, was led by Jason Kong and Ravin Singh. Pupils were briefed on the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the KL Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the KL Bar Committee and highlights of the Malaysian Bar. The introduction session included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their period of pupillage and the Chairman and members of the KLBC were on hand to provide input and possible solutions. Amongst the issues raised by the pupils at this session were e-filing, poor signage at the Courts in other States, Land Office issues, Legal Aid, the Telephone system at the Bar Council and low allowance.

PDC Seminar on Recent Tax Cases – Insights to Court Room Drama
S. Saravana Kumar from Messrs Lee Hishammuddin Allen and Gledhill presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3.00pm. The seminar was attended by 27 participants. KL Bar Annual Dinner and Dance
The KL Bar Annual Dinner and Dance was held on 12 November 2011 at Cititel, Mid Valley. The theme this year was VIVA LAS VEGAS! The Dinner was attended by more than 300 lawyers and the entertainment for the memorable night were The Creative Dancers performing cabaret dances, 2 bands comprising lawyers from Cheah Teh and Su & Raja Darryl and Loh and DJ Twilight Action Girl. PDC Seminar on Joint Ventures and Strategic Alliances
Jeremiah R. Gurusamy from Messrs Arianti Dipendra Jeremiah presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3.00pm. The seminar was attended by 58 participants. The seminar covered the following areas: “What are the essential considerations when entering into a joint venture?”, “Key pointers for handling negotiations and dealing with compliance and regulatory issues”, “Drafting various contracts and typical clauses”, “Critical clauses to be incorporated in a JV and Shareholders Agreement” and “Exits and termination – what to do if things go wrong”.

ITCC Forum on Freedom of Speech in the New Media
The KL Bar Information Technology and Communications Committee (“ITCC”) organised a forum entitled “Freedom of Speech in the New Media” on 17 November 2011 at 5.00pm at the KL Bar Auditorium. The Forum was aimed at addressing some of the key issues such as the implications of freedom of speech in the new media, the effect of the new media on the way journalism and communication works, how should the new media be placed alongside with the traditional media as well as management and regulation of the new media. The speakers were Jahabar Sadiq (the CEO of The Malaysian Insider), Foong Cheng Leong (an Advocate and Solicitor) and Fahmi Fadzil (a Social Media Activist). The Forum was moderated by H.R. Dipendra and was sponsored by Media Defence-South Eastasia. 32 participants attended the Forum. Click here to view the photos.

PDC Seminar on An Introduction to NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming) for Legal Practitioners
Amir Bahari from Messrs Bahari & Bahari presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 9.00am. The seminar was attended by 19 participants. The seminar covered the following areas: “Definition of NLP”, “Purpose of NLP”, “NLP and law of attraction”, “Applying NLP for relationship, legal career, finance and health”.

YLC 2nd Social Get Together
The Young Lawyers Committee organised its second social get together on Friday, 18 November 2011 at Bakita, Changkat Bukit Bintang. The event was an opportunity for members of the Bar and pupils to meet with fellow lawyers in an informal setting. The crowd started trickling in from 7.30pm onwards. More than 50 young lawyers attended the get-together.

The KLBC sponsored one volunteer lawyer from the KL LAC to attend the Seminar, “Rights Denied: The Orang Asli Struggle Continues!”. The Seminar was organised by the Bar Council’s Committee on Orang Asli Rights and was held at the Raja Aziz Addruse Auditorium on 19 November 2011.

PWC Workshop on Criminal Litigation
The workshop, organised by the KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee specifically for pupils, was presented by Mr Ravin Singh on 22 November 2011 at 3.00pm. The workshop focused primarily on client interview, mitigation, bail application and trial process. The workshop was attended by 16 participants.

Forum on Electronic Filing (e-filing) and its Implementation
The KLBC organised a Forum on “Electronic Filing (e-filing) and Its Implementation” on 23 November 2011 at the KL Bar Auditorium at 5.00pm. The Forum was held to help members better understand the system and voice their concerns and issues that they faced in regards to the implementation of the Electronic Filing System (EFS) by the Judiciary at the Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Shah Alam, Penang and Johor Courts. The Forum was attended by 44 participants. The panelists were Brendan Navin Siva (KL Bar Chairman and Co-Chair of the Civil Court Liaison Committee), Ravin Singh (Co-Chair of the Civil Court Liaison Committee) and Lim Puay Aun (Formis). Representing the KL Courts as observers were Tuan Nazri Ismail and Puan Adira. A full report will follow soon.

Interstate Bar Games
The Interstate Bar Games was held on 26 November 2011 with the Selangor Bar as host. The overall champion was the Kuala Lumpur Bar who won 3 out of the 5 games played namely, Badminton, Netball and Volleyball. The other games played were Football and Golf.
