PDC/YLC Workshop on The Complete Lawyer: Mastering Time Management, Soft Skills and Finance Management
The Workshop started at about 10.00am and ended at about 4.00pm. The esteemed speakers were Seira Sacha Abu Bakar and Syahredzan Johan for Time Management, Janet Chai Pei Ying and Jeremiah R Gurusamy for Soft Skills and Sri Sarguna Raj and Teh Tai Yong who spoke on Finance Management. We had 53 participants for the Workshop.

The Time Management session covered the following areas:

  1. Do You Have A Problem With Managing Your Time?
    1. (a) Time-related stress
    2. (b) Why need to manage your time
    3. (c) There are only 24 hours in a day
  2. How To Manage Your Time – Techniques
    1. (a) Categories of scheme to manage your time
    2. (b) The various techniques to manage your time
  3. Quiz – Analysis of Your Time Management
  4. Q&A – Personal Experiences

The Soft Skills session covered the following areas:

  1. How to communicate effectively in a team – “There is ‘me’ in team”
  2. How to strike up a conversation at a networking event: “How you doing?”
  3. How to present yourself: Grooming 101
  4. Business etiquette for lawyers: Handing out Business Cards, Who Pays, Where to Sit and other tips
  5. Tips on how to give a good speech – Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears”

Finally, the Finance Management session led by Sri and Tai Yong shared their wealth of experiences and gave useful tips on the issues of Finance Management. Sri spoke on topics ranging from “Spending Habits & Bank Traps”, “How to Escape from the Traps”, “The PAD (Protection, Accumulation and Distribution) of Financial Planning”, “Emphasis on the A of Financial Planning and Investments” whilst Tai Yong shared his experience in building a portfolio of property investments from a young lawyer’s perspective.

KLBC Pupils Introduction Session
Organised by the KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee (PWC), the introduction session for February was held on 15 February 2012. The session, attended by 81 pupils, was led by Jason Kong and Ravin Singh. Pupils were briefed on the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the KL Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the KL Bar Committee and highlights of the Malaysian Bar. The introduction session included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their period of pupillage and the Chairman and members of the KLBC were on hand to provide input and possible solutions. Amongst the issues raised by the pupils at this session were low allowance, no overtime, no leave during the period of pupillage, e-filing, the Ethics and Professional Skills Examination.

Appreciation Dinner
The KLBC hosted a dinner for sub-committee members and people who have contributed to its activities and success of the KL Bar in the 2011/12 term. The dinner was held at The Hill, Damansara Heights at 7.00pm.

PDC Seminar on The Fundamentals of Bankruptcy Proceedings
Sanjeev Kumar Rasiah from Messrs Sanjeev Kumar presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3.00pm. The seminar was attended by 123 participants. The seminar covered the following areas on bankruptcy proceedings, “Introduction to the Bankruptcy Act”, “The bankruptcy notice”, “The creditor’s petition”, “Obtaining an adjudication and receiving order”, “Proving of debts” and “The first creditors’ meeting”.

20th Annual General Meeting of the Kuala Lumpur Bar
The 20th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Kuala Lumpur Bar scheduled for 2.00pm was adjourned to 3.15pm due to the lack of a quorum. The office-bearers of the KLBC for 2012/13 elected at the AGM were: Chairman – Brendan Navin Siva; Committee members – Muhendaran Suppiah, Agnes Chan Kim Hong, Jeremiah R Gurusamy, Harleen Kaur (Leena), Ravinder Singh Dhalliwal (Ravin), Khaizan Sharizad Binti Ab Razak (Sherrie), Jason Kong, Noorhajran Mohd Noor, Goh Siu Lin and Amrit Pal Singh. H R Dipendra was elected as the KL Bar’s Representative to the Bar Council. Lim Chi Chau and Melissa Sasidaran who gracefully withdrew from standing for the election to the Committee were co-opted as members of the Committee.

The Motion proposed by the KLBC to increase the Annual Subscription by RM25-00 to RM125-00 was unanimously carried.

A number of issues pertaining to the Judiciary and the Courts were raised by members present at the AGM and the newly elected Chairman had given an assurance that he would deal with all the issues.

Reference Proceedings in Respect and Memory of Departed Members of the KL Bar
A Reference in respect and memory of 13 departed members of the Kuala Lumpur Bar was held at the Kuala Lumpur High Court (RKKK 2) on Friday, 24 February 2012 at 10.00am. The Reference was presided by Y.A. Dato’ Rohana Yusuf and Y.A. Dr Prasad Abraham. The departed members were Khalid Bin Mohamad, Dr Stephen Goh Tyau Hin, Ramasamy Shanmugam, Datuk Hajjah Ilani Binti Dato’ Haji Isahak, Ng Yeong Lee, Dato’ Anpalagan a/l Ramiah, Raja Aziz Addruse, Yap Wai Kit, Tan Tan Bok @ Chen Chanple, Nik Hashim Bin Nik Daud, K S Narayanan, Dato’ Liew Teck Keong and Ramalingam Thanni Malai.

The seminar covered the following areas: “Parties to a sale and purchase transaction”, “Property with and without individual title”, “Direct developer and subsale transactions” and “Conveyancing and retail banking documentation and common mistakes and how to avoid them”.

PDC Seminar on an Introduction to the Common Disputes in the Construction Industry and ADR Processes
Belden Premaraj, Shanthi Supramaniam and Adrian See Jooi Hong from Messrs Belden presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 10.00am. The seminar was attended by 58 participants. The seminar covered various areas, amongst which were “An introduction to common disputes ADR processes”, “Project delays & extension of time – understanding the contract, the evidence, the analysis”, “Termination”, “Performance bonds”, “Arbitration in Malaysia” and “The Construction Industry Payment and Adjudication Bill”.
